ORGANIC GARDENING IN WEST CORNWALL
According to where in West Cornwall you live, you have two organic gardening groups to choose from. Penwith Organic Gardeners and Growers (POGG) covers the Penzance area, while Helston, the Lizard Peninsula and Kerrier are served by HOGG, based in Helston.
POGG was founded in 1990 and HOGG in 2005, Both groups are affiliated to HDRA / Garden Organic, the national organic association with headquarters at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry.
Both groups have the same aims: to help their members gain from each other’s experiences of gardening and growing using organic methods by pooling ideas and knowledge. Even a window box can be organic, and the emphasis is firmly on enjoyment. In a wider context we also aim to promote the organic movement to a wider audience, as well as among manufacturers and retailers. POGG and HOGG work closely together, with the structure of both groups kept to the minimum necessary for smooth running, and everyone’s input is welcomed.
Our friendly informal meetings are an ideal opportunity for exchanging tips, contacts and information. Summer meetings take the form of visits to gardens (members’ and others); speakers and topics of interest are arranged for the winter months (normally October to May). During the winter POGG meets at Marazion Community Centre on the last Tuesday in the month, and HOGG at Helston Community College on the preceding Thursday. Members of both groups are welcome at all meetings.
POGG membership costs £3 per household per year, and HOGG £5. These subscriptions pay for a joint newsletter for both groups with 10 issues a year. This can be sent either by email, or as a paper copy for which members provide stamped addressed envelopes.
NEXT MEETINGS: Details of the next meetings of POGG and HOGG are given in the newsletter which you can download by clicking on this link http://tinyurl.com/phoggnews .
